Planning a 3D scan

Practical answers before you book a 3D scan.

Start with what you want to achieve: recreate a part, compare its shape, or plan changes to a factory. That determines the measurements and files you need.

Can a 3D scan produce editable CAD?

Yes, scan data can be used to build CAD models. Creating the CAD model is a separate step from capturing the scan.

A point cloud is a collection of measured points. A mesh joins points into small surfaces. Neither automatically provides the dimensions, features and design history you would expect from a native CAD model.

For reverse engineering, the scan provides a reference for modelling the part. Agree whether you need a mesh, a STEP model or a native CAD model with editable features. A STEP file can transfer solid or surface geometry, but does not normally carry the original feature history.

Also explain whether the model should reproduce the part as it is now, including wear, or represent its intended design. Hidden faces and internal features may need extra measurements or drawings.

Can shiny or black components be scanned?

Often, but the scanner, surface finish and required detail affect the approach. A photograph and material description help us assess the component.

Very reflective surfaces can redirect the scanner's light, while dark surfaces may return less light. Some components can be captured by adjusting the setup; others may need a suitable temporary scanning coating. Transparent surfaces can also need preparation.

Tell us if a coating is not permitted, if the part has a delicate finish, or if cleaning and contamination are concerns. Surface preparation should be agreed before scanning, taking the material and measurement requirements into account.

For an initial discussion, provide the approximate dimensions, material, finish, quantity and the features that matter most. Do not apply a coating yourself before discussing suitability.

What affects the cost of factory 3D scanning?

Floor area is a starting point. The number of scan positions, access and the work needed after scanning also affect the budget.

  • Coverage: multiple levels, dense machinery and obstructed views can require more scan positions.
  • Site access: working hours, inductions, movement and restricted areas affect how the survey can be organised.
  • Travel and time on site: location, survey duration and any overnight stays contribute to the cost.
  • Required files: preparing a registered point cloud is different from developing CAD models or manufacturing drawings.

It includes a data-transfer allowance of two hours after each block of 30 scans when further scans are needed. Actual access, coverage and required files are reviewed before a quotation is agreed.

Have the approximate length, width, number of levels, site location and intended use ready. Note any important equipment interfaces or areas needing extra coverage.
