A misleading position signal
Existing designs mounted the position sensor away from the derailer on a link arm. If that arm broke, the sensor could continue to report a position that no longer reflected the true state of the derailer.

Existing designs mounted the position sensor away from the derailer on a link arm. If that arm broke, the sensor could continue to report a position that no longer reflected the true state of the derailer.
Gendraw positioned the sensor directly on the derailer unit so its reading represented the unit's actual position, even if the link arm failed. Direct mounting introduced greater vibration—which was why earlier designs had located the sensor away from the unit—so correctly specified components were selected to withstand the new vibration levels. The sensor was also positioned where it would remain protected from the train wheels.
The revised arrangement provided more reliable position data and a protected sensing solution. Gendraw developed the design in 3D CAD, prepared manufacturing drawings and produced an animation that supported approval before manufacture and installation.
